The Concert

An excerpt from “6 Blocks Home

It didn’t take long for Sam to lose herself in the music. Everything else faded from awareness — even Tobias — until it was just her and the sound of the orchestra. The music washed over her and moved through her and swept her away. She closed her eyes and breathed it in.

Because of the way the chairs were arranged in the box, Tobias couldn’t watch the orchestra without also watching Sam. And soon, he only watched her. She fascinated him. The rapture — that’s the only word he could think of to describe it — on her face mesmerized him. The music had done something to her, and he ached to feel what she felt, to hear the music the way she heard it.
